Overview

Lockerly Arboretum, located in Milledgeville, Georgia, is a private, non-profit 501c (3) organization whose mission focuses on providing horticultural, ecological and historical education for over 5,000 students/visitors per year. It is dedicated to not only education, but also to all aspects of a public arboretum, as well as the preservation of Rose Hill, an antebellum Greek Revival mansion situated on the grounds. Founded in 1965, the 50-acre Arboretum, with its 1852 mansion, Rose Hill, is open to the public six days a week.  In addition, there is a 200-acre environmental campus near Eatonton, Georgia. 


The staff consists of a Horticulture Director, an Education Director, an Office Manager, Maintenance Technician and part-time groundskeepers. Community volunteers also play a critical role in providing services and support to the Arboretum’s horticulture, education and historic preservation programs. The annual operating budget is $350,000-$400,000. 


Position Description   The Executive Director (ED) will be responsible to the Board of Trustees for the development and implementation of long term plans for fundraising, grant writing and public relations, as well as planning and budgets for day to day operations. Major responsibilities include staff management, facilities maintenance, budgeting and finance, coordination of volunteers, and management of the Arboretum’s website, social media connections, monthly newsletter, grant writing, and fundraising (includes solicitation of donors, sponsors, “Friends of Lockerly”). The ED will support the efforts of the Education and Horticulture Directors, work closely with volunteers and serve as the “public face of Lockerly”.

Required Qualifications

The Board of Trustees seeks a self-motivated individual with strong organizational, public relations, public speaking and fundraising skills as well as experience with grant applications and working with volunteers.  Minimum requirements are a BA/BS (advanced degree preferred) in a related field and experience in management, fundraising and grant writing. Experience in arboretums, public gardens or related not-for-profit organizations is preferred. Work with historic preservation is highly desirable.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Make sure all jobs are completed in a timely and efficient manner. 

• Speak with customers in regards to concerns they have with their accounts. 

• Effectively communicate and coordinate customer’s needs with the owner.

• Ensure each job is completed in the appropriate timeframe with an emphasis on quality.

Quality Control Manager

The quality control manager’s primary responsibilities include tagging plant material for customer orders, being knowledgeable of customer expectations, and keeping a count of current inventory.  The quality control manager must also track current crop progression as well as assist in production numbers of future crops.

Other Responsibilities

  • Providing documentation of plant material to customers and sales associates.
  • Managing Quality and Inventory Assistant’s tasks and work schedule.
  • Familiarity with specs and descriptions of all current and future plant material
  • Touring walk-in customers around nursery property

Education Requirements

  • 2 year horticulture degree minimum
  • Bachelor degree
  • Management and nursery experience advantageous
